As one of the most prominent literati of his time, Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) was a member of the Song imperial clan. After the conquest of 1279, he accepted Kublai Khan's offer of an official post and served under five emperors in a number of high posts, including Hanlin Academician Recipient of Edicts (Hanlin xueshi chengzhi) and Grand Master for Glorious Happiness (Guanglu dafu). He excelled in painting landscape, portraiture, horses, birds and flowers, bamboo and rocks. He advocated the view that calligraphy and painting had a common origin. His legacies significantly influenced later generations of literati painters.
  Zhao Mengfu transcribed for Monk Yueke (style name Zhongting) a septasyllabic quatrain entitled Dedicated to Eminent Monk Weiyan of Yaoshan Mountain (with slight discrepancies compared to the current version) by Tang (618-907) poet Li Ao (772-841). Rendered in a seasoned, virtuoso fashion, the characters are all well-structured and ingeniously-spaced in terms of composition. Though its scale is small, it is still regarded as one of Zhao Mengfu's mature running-script masterpieces.
  The calligrapher signed "written by Ziang (style name of Zhao Mengfu) for the elder man Zhongting", and affixed the seal "Ziang of the Zhao Family".
  Important collectors' seals include the seal "Forever Kept by Sons and Grandsons of the Prince of Qianning" (Qianningwang zizisunsun yongbaozhi) by Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) official Mu Ang (1379-1445) and the modern seal "Private Seal of Zhang Heng".
