Undated, album leaf, ink on paper, 34.3 × 35.9 cm

A native of Yuyang (today's northern part of Beijing), Xianyu Shu lived most of his life in Yangzhou and Hangzhou. He served as Retainer for Militia (shuaifu congshi), and was later transferred to the State Finance Commission (sansi). He also served the official post of Archivist for Court of Imperial Sacrifices (Taichang si dianbu).  He was a proficient poet, musician, and calligrapher. In Yuan-dynasty calligraphy circles, his accomplishment in running cursive script can only be rivaled by Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322).

Xianyu Shu transcribed the eleventh poem from a poetry collection by Du Fu (712-770) known as Twelve Poems about Returning Melancholy (Fuchou shiershou) (with slight discrepancies compared with the current version). In spite of the album leaf's modest scale, the loose composition, vigorous brushstrokes fully embody the calligrapher's highly individualistic style featuring bold and unconstrained rendering of the characters. (Editor:admin)
