This is the caption of image number 1Wen Chu (ca. 1594-1634), Ming dynasty (1368-1644)
Dated 1631, four from the eight leaves in the album, ink and color on paper, 27.8 × 42.8 cm

Wen Chu was the great-great-granddaughter of the eminent artist Wen Zhengming (1470-1559). A native of Changzhou (today's Suzhou in Jiangsu Province), she married Zhao Lingjun, the son of the Song imperial descendent and scholar artist Zhao Huanguang (1559-1626). An intelligent woman, Wen Shu was good at painting flowers and insects with delicate color wash but no outline delineation. Rocks and aged pine trees in her paintings, however, are rendered in an experienced and dynamic brush style. Her bird-and-flower paintings were so influential on woman painters that she inspired many imitators.
