Local residents take a weekend hike.
As spring arrives many activities that intrigue people come with a price tag. Many people crave a shopping spree for new seasonal clothes, while others opt to wash away any memory of winter in a spa or resort getaway.
But celebrating spring doesn't have to cost you.
To take advantage of the new-found sunshine, fresh air and for an escape from the bustling metropolis, hiking is an inexpensive way to satisfy your spring time cabin fever.
Hiking, when done safely, can relax a person when they need relaxation most. It is also a great way to learn about nature and sometimes even the history of the area. With a little preparation, hiking can be an interesting fitness outing with minimal costs, sending every participant home content.
Mountain climbing is a tradition many Chinese have practised over the years as a way to greet the spring. Recent years have seen a gradual change in the main purpose of the activity from celebration to exercise, due to the increased awareness of fitness among the public. In fact, the famous Fragrant Hills have become so crowded with hikers on the weekends that an outing there is sometimes no longer fun.
As a city surrounded by mountains, Beijing offers a range of choices for people at different fitness levels to go hiking. For novice hikers, Baiwangshan National Park is a good place to take on their first trek. Located three kilometres north of the Summer Palace, the park spans an area of 133.3 hectares with a peak of 210 metres, which provides a perfect overview of the city skyline on clear days. The park is full of plants and less burdened by visitors, which makes it a huge natural garden within a close distance from the bustling downtown area, an ideal destination for a perfect day out.
Before you hit the hills, a little preparation will help you enjoy your day out.
You will need lighter clothing layers for spring. If you are new to walking, this is your chance to go shopping for shorts and light tops, preferably wicking sweaters that will keep you comfortable in the warmer weather. If you are a veteran walker, now is the time to unpack your spring and summer workout clothes and check to see what needs to be replaced. The general rule is to wear clothes that are both comfortable and convenient to put on and take off, depending on the temperature.
Although hiking is a simple sport and requires little equipment, there are still some things you should make sure you have prepared.
The most important item is shoes. Feet are the most important body part when hiking.
The paths on Baiwangshan are paved and the hill includes stone stairs which can be a constant fray to your ankles and knees. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and have good traction on the bottom. Invest in a pair that are durable and water-proof and break them in at home. Double-knot your shoes to avoid tripping and wear thick, cushioning socks. You might even want to bring along two pairs. When you get home, soak and massage your feet, since they will probably be a little sore.
Take along water to replenish you as you break a sweat. Snack foods which are light, compact and do not melt should also be part of your pack, in case you get hungry or are lacking energy mid-hike.
Sunglasses and a hat are also good items to bring with to protect you from the sun. An MP3 player and a camera will surely make your hike more fun.
After all your preparations, the last thing to consider is the weather forecast. Always bring a rain coat along with you, just in case.
Tie up your shoes and get going!
