The area around Shuang An Shopping Centre is one of the busiest in Haidian District.
Located around Sitong motorway interchange at the west part of north third ring road, landmarks within the area include Huaxing Cinema, the Friendship Hotel and Renmin University.
Food styles in the area include Chinese, Japanese, Western fast food and Thai.
Jin Chi Niao (golden winged bird) Restaurant is one of the area's more upmarket eateries. It is located on the second floor of Zhong Dian Xin Xi Da Sha (China Electronic Information Mansion), which sits at the southwest corner of Sitong motorway interchange.
The food combines both Cantonese and Sichuan flavours.
The majority of main dishes are between 25 yuan (US$3) and 40 yuan (US$5). But on a plate on the table there are a dozen cheaper choices priced at 18 yuan (US2.2). These include spicy boiled fish.
There are more expensive dishes, too. The restaurant offers abalone and shark's fin from 168 yuan (US$20) to 498 yuan (US$60) per person.
One of the restaurant's recommended signature dishes is Tianmu Lake earthenware pot fish head soup. A small pot costs 98 yuan (US$12) but a bowl per person costs 18 yuan (US$2.2). Braised for more than an hour and a half, the soup looks milk white and tastes delicious.
A pickled egg yolk fried with pumpkin looks golden, with egg yolk on the surface of the pumpkin pieces. The yolk tastes salty and fragrant while the pumpkin inside is very soft.
A stewed baby pigeon has too many bones but still tastes good. It is so tender that some of the bones can be chewed and eaten.
Bamboo shoot tips (xiang you sun jian), a cold dish, is a little spicy with red pepper oil on it. But it is very tender.
Staple food includes Thai fragrant rice, Yangzhou fried rice (yang zhou chao fan) and dry-fried rice noodles (gan chao niu he).
An average meal for two costs 140 yuan (US$17).
The restaurant with a seating capacity of 200 people seems to attract more customers than two other restaurants on the same floor. One is Japanese and one is Thai.
